DURBAN MUTTON CHOPS CHUTNEY INGREDIENTS:

For marinating the chops chutney Indian style:

  • 8 lamb loin chops 
  • salt & pepper to taste
  • dried parsley flakes (optional)
  • 1 tbsp of oil

 

To make the Durban chutney recipe:

  • 1 tbsp of oil
  • 1 large onion diced
  • 6 cloves of minced garlic (can be substitutes for garlic paste)
  • 1 fresh red chili sliced (you can also use green chillies)
  • 1/4 tsp chili powder (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt  & black pepper
  • 2 large tomatoes diced or grated (you can use either fresh tomatoes or canned ones, but i always try use fresh)

 

HOW TO MAKE DURBAN STYLE CHOPS CHUTNEY RECIPE:

1. Rinse the lamb chops under cold running water and pat them dry with a paper towel until they are completely dry. Sprinkle the chops with salt and pepper and dried parsley.

2. Heat up your oil on medium heat in a large pan and once it’s nice and hot, put your marinated lamb chops into the pan in a single layer. Fry them for 3-5 minutes on each side until they are golden brown.

3. Once done frying, take them off the pan and place them on a side plate to rest. Do not wash the pan!

4. On the same pan, add 1 tbsp of oil and cook the diced onion on medium heat for 5 minutes.

5. Add the minced garlic and sliced chilly and cook for additional 2 minutes.

6. While it’s frying, in a separate small bowl, mix up your chilly powder, turmeric, jeera seeds, garam masala, salt, sugar, and pepper. Add the spice mix to the onion-garlic-chilly mix and fry for an additional 2 minutes on low heat to open up the spices.

7. Add the diced tomatoes and about 1/2 cup of water to the pan and cook on medium heat for 10 minutes. Add a little water if you like your chutney saucier.

8. Once the tomatoes are done cooking, add the lamb loin chops back onto the pan and coat them with all the delicious tomato mix. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves if you desire.

Can you make these lamb chops chutney in the oven?

Sometimes when I have more time and not in a hurry for dinner, I like to cook the chops in the oven. Simply preheat your oven to 160C (320F) and cook for 20-25 minutes until the chops are evenly golden.

You can flip them halfway through, although it’s not absolutely necessary.

Rich, spicy and delectable lamb chops chutney recipe that's ready in just 30 minutes and can be made in oven or stovetop. This traditional South African dinner recipe, chops chutney Durban style is so quick and easy to make and will be a favorite with your whole family.

Ingredients

For the lamb chops

  • 8 lamb loin chops
  • salt & pepper to taste (I use about 1 tsp each)
  • 1/2 tsp dried parsley flakes
  • 1 tbsp of oil

For the South African Chutney

  • 1 tsp of oil
  • 1 onion (diced)
  • 6 cloves of garlic (minced)
  • 1 fresh red chilli (sliced)
  • 1/4 tsp chilli powder
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt & pepper
  • 2 large tomatoes (diced or grated)

Instructions

  1. Wash lamb chops with cold running water and then pat dry with a paper towel. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and dried parsley leaves.
  2. Heat up 1 tbsp of oil on medium heat and fry the chops for 3-5 minutes on each site until golden. If your pan is small, do this in 2 batches, do not overcrowd. Once done frying, take them off the pan and place on a plate to rest.
  3. On the same pan, add 1 tbsp of oil and cook onion on medium heat for 5 minutes until transparent.
  4. Add minced garlic, thinly sliced chilly and cook for an additional 2 minutes.
  5. Add in all of your spices (salt, sugar, pepper, chilli powder, turmeric powder, cumin seeds and garam masala) and cook on low for 2 minutes to open up the spices.
  6. Mix in grated or diced tomatoes and about 1/2 cup of water and cook on medium heat for 10 minutes. After that, add the lamb chops back into the chutney mix and over them. Garnish with fresh coriander and serve.

I still recommend making the chutney on stovetop though.
