Ingredients and Substitutions

Hot Dog Buns: Fresh or slightly stale hot dog buns work great.

Salted Butter: I prefer using softened butter with salt but you can also use unsalted butter and add 1/4 tsp salt to it. You can also swap the salt for olive oil or margarine but I personally think butter tastes best in this recipe.

Garlic Powder: This recipe uses garlic powder for convenience but you’re more than welcome to use fresh garlic that’s been grated or minced. The recipe uses 1 teaspoon garlic powder which can be substituted for 2 garlic cloves.

Cheddar Cheese: Use grated cheese with a sharp flavor such as cheddar cheese, Colby jack, or parmesan cheese.

Optional: Add 1/2 tsp Italian seasoning or dried parsley for more flavor.

Is hot dog bun garlic bread healthy?

I will be honest and say this is not the healthiest of recipes as each slice contains about 205 calories, 15 grams of fat, 14 g carbs, and 4 g protein but if you stick to the suggested serving size they can be ok health-wise.

To make this recipe healthier, you can use less butter (only use about half of the original recipe amount) and skip the cheese altogether. The taste won’t be as great but I regularly make this for my aunt who follows a low-calorie diet and she says it still tastes good.

Can you make this in an air fryer?

You can make garlic bread buns in an air fryer by following these directions:

Mix the garlic butter, spread on top of the hot dog buns, and bake in an air fryer at 380 F for 3-4 minutes until golden brown. You will need to do this in batches to avoid overcrowding.

Can you use hamburger buns?

You sure can! Make hamburger bun garlic bread by slicing the leftover buns in half, spreading with the same garlic butter mixture, and toasting in the oven until golden brown.

Storage Instructions:

Fridge: Store in an airtight container for up to 2 days.

To Reheat: Toast the garlic bread in a preheated oven for 2-3 minutes until reheated.

Freezer: Wrap garlic buns with plastic wrap or aluminum foil and place them in a freezer bag. You can freeze these for up to 3 months.
