16 Home Cleaning Hacks And Tips That Will Make You Love Cleaning
1. Invest in good quality easy to use cleaning appliances
I am always short on time and just the thought of spending 30+ minutes on just cleaning the floors(vacuuming+mopping) in my house gives me the chills. When I recently went to my friends’ house who has 3 little kids and a sparkling clean floor, I begged her to tell me her secret. She showed me this incredible machine that vacuums and washes the floors at the same time.
I have to be honest, I thought she must be lying because if there really was a tool like that then why didn’t EVERYONE own one?! After agreeing to borrow it to me for a day I used it in my home and was amazed that it actually did just that. My floors have honestly never looked this great and I placed an order for my own the very next day. Any tool that will make me spend less time cleaning my floors is a huge win in my book.
It is a bit pricey but nowhere near as expensive as my Dyson which I have now completely retired since this tool is so much more effective at cleaning and saves me at least 20 minutes every time I clean my floors.
2. Clean your dishwasher with baking soda and vinegar
Another appliance in your kitchen that probably needs a clean ASAP is your dishwasher. Luckily there’s a cheap option to do that and save yourself $5-$10 from not buying those expensive dishwasher cleaners.
Empty your washer from all of the dishes and sprinkle 1 cup of baking soda on the bottom. Let it sit overnight. In the morning set your dishwasher on the hottest setting, it can go and let it fill for about 5-10minutes until there is a little bit of water in it. Then pour in 2 cups of vinegar and let the cycle run as normal. You will be amazed at how much cleaner your dishes will come out.
3. Use vinegar for the sparkling clean cutlery
Is your cutlery looking at bit dull and stained? Use this trick learned while waitressing at a fine dining restaurant.
Fill a container or a bowl with 1 cup of white vinegar and about 4 cups of boiling hot water. Place all your cutlery in the container and let sit for 5 minutes. Carefully remove the cutlery from the container one by one while using a clean cloth to polish them.
I don’t bother with that hack on a day to day basis but I certainly do it when the In-law are coming over or we have friends over.
4. Use a cleaning caddy
Do you know that feeling of finally getting in the mood of cleaning and then having to spend heaps of time running around the house, looking to microfiber cloths, cleaning solutions, sponges etc. There is nothing worse to ruin your cleaning motivation than that.
That is why I invested in a cheap cleaning caddy to keep everything in one place. So when it’s time to get my clean on, I just grab my caddy which has all the supplies: microfiber cloths, cleaning solutions(multipurpose cleaner and a glass cleaner), sponges, scrubbers, and disposable gloves for cleaning the bathroom.
5. Place newspaper in the bottom of the bins
I always place some newspaper in the bottom of my bins to help absorb the odors and any liquid that leak from the bag. This will make the cleanup a breeze and I rarely have to actually clean the bins!
6. Clean oven glass door with magic erasers
Is there anything magic erasers can’t do? You can easily clean your grimy glass oven door with a magic eraser. Just make it slightly wet and scrub away. It only took me about 7 minutes of scrubbing to completely change the look of my oven. Ps. don’t waste your money buying the brand name expensive magic erasers. I buy these cheap ones that work exactly the same and cost only pennies!
Do you feel like your house is constantly disorganized and messy and goes back to chaos just hours after cleaning it?
You need to try an online course called The Organised Home. It’s perfect for people who feel like:
- You always get anxious whenever you have guests coming over and need hours of notice to clean up your home because you feel embarrassed by the state of it.
- Always worried you misplaced an important document or item and won’t be able to find things when you need them.
- You feel like you can’t enjoy a peaceful time on your couch, enjoying time with your family and always find yourself stressing about the state of your home.

7. Use a piece of bread to pick up glass
Using your hands to pick up tiny pieces of glass is very dangerous and the brush just doesn’t get everything up. Just pat a piece of bread over the area where the glass broke and you should be able to pick up almost all of it without injuring yourself.
8. When cleaning your home do task by task not room by room
This hack was the biggest game-changer for me when it came to cutting down on the total amount of time I spent cleaning. By doing task by task for example dust the whole house, vacuum the whole house instead of doing tasks by room, it takes me so much less time to actually clean the whole house and I love that I can put the appliance away when I’m done with it.
9. Clean your computer keyboard with ease
Just take a second to think how disgusting your keyboard actually is. And the chances are it hasn’t been cleaned in a while if not ever. But it’s one of those items that’s hard to clean. Well thankfully, some came up with a solution to that problem – this amazing cleaning putty. It will remove dust, hair, dirt, and crumbs from cracks and crevices in your keyboard without leaving any harmful residue behind.
10. Wash kids toys in a washing machine
Which mom has time to handwash their kids’ toys? There’s no need to. Just throw all your kids toys and legos in a mesh laundry bag and put them in the washing machine. This will make quite a lot of noise though so best do it when you are out of the house.
11. Clean your microwave with no scrubbing
Fill a microwave-safe bowl with 1 cup of water and 2 tablespoons of vinegar and microwave it for 3 minutes. This should loosen up all the dried up food bits and grime and all you have to do is just quickly wipe the insides down.
12. Clean your blender in less than 30 seconds
After making your morning smoothie and pouring it out into your glass, fill the blender jug about half way with water and a small squirt of dishwasher liquid. Blend that for 30 seconds and then pour it out and rinse. Your blender should be completely clean including the blades.
13. Clean your stinky drains with baking soda and vinegar
There’s no need to buy expensive and toxic drain cleaners. All you need is baking soda and vinegar to unclog and clean your drains. I usually do this about twice a month at night time. Pour 1 cup of baking soda into your drain and let it sit for about 5 minutes. Then pour 2 cups of white vinegar on top of it and you should see a fizz happening. This fizzing will destroy any gunk stuck in your drain and 9 times out of 10 you won’t need to use any drain cleaners.
I like to do this at night time because the drain won’t be used again for at least 8 hours so it leaves plenty of time for the solution to completely clean the drains.
14. Microfiber cloth for dusting high up places
Take a plain floor brush with a long handle and wrap a microfiber cloth around the brush, using rubber bands to attach it. This will work well for dusting high up shelves and above cupboards and so without you climbing high up to reach them.
15. Microwave dish sponge to kill bacteria
Did you know that the kitchen sponge is one of the dirtiest items in your kitchen? Bacteria thrives in wet and warm surfaces and guess what – that’s exactly what your sponge is. So to clean and kill bacteria, slightly wet your sponge and pop it into the microwave for 2 minutes. Wait until it cools and take it out and it’s as good as new again! The heat will kill the bacteria and make it safe to use on your dishes. I do this about once a week to keep my sponge clean.
16. Dry your toilet brush with no mess
I used to always hate the way water would collect at the toilet brush container but since discovering this quick tip, I never have to worry about it anymore. After using the toilet brush for scrubbing the toilet place it to dry in between the toilet bowl and the lid. Remove it when fully dry.
