Choosing a name for your blog is actually an incredibly important step because you can’t really change it once you have decided on a name.
Well technically you can but ask any blogger who has done that and they will tell you what a Nightmare it is.. so it’s much better to choose a name right off the bat that you will love or at least like for a long time.
If you are reading this but you don’t have a blog of your own yet then you can check out my easy step-by-step guide on how to start your own blog today!
To get the ball rolling I suggest grabbing a pen and paper and get to thinking about these 3 things:
1.What’s your blog going to be about
So let’s say you are starting a blog about sewing, you would want to go with a name that has either sewing or something related to sewing in it.
Write down your main topic that your blog is going to be about and then try to find related words to it so, for example, sewing, sew, needle, needlework, dressmaking, fabric, crafting, patterns and so on.
Writing down all these words might help you see two words that fit nicely together or for example, adding your own name to it and creating a unique name that is relevant to both your blog topic as well as yourself.
For example SueSews.
If you are stuck you might want to try this totally free synonym finder http://www.thesaurus.com/ that you can enter your main blog topic into and it will synonyms and related words to you that might be might spark an idea and help you come up with a great name!
2.Who do you want to be your target audience
Do you want your main audience to be men? women? young adults? athletes? and so on.
You have to create a name that feels familiar and natural to your main target audience, so if you choose to cater to mainly young adults try to choose a name that is quite hip and easily remembered.
3.What is going to be the tone of your blog
Again, this depends on your target audience and how you want to communicate with them.
If you want to be really professional and have your blog serve an educational purpose you should avoid using slangs and ‘funny’ words.
If you choose your blog to have a relaxed vibe you might want to use a play on words or a funny and cool and possibly make up new words based on your blog topics.
If all else fails just use your full name as your blog name
This offers a lot of benefits if you plan to down the line build a brand around your name.
It is also great if you want to keep from narrowing down too much and keep your blog topics quite open as you can easily blog about pretty much anything if your blog name is just your full name.
Choosing a blog name is definitely an important process as it is incredibly hard to change in the future but you shouldn’t make it a stressful event and try to have fun with it!
I made the mistake of overthinking my blog name and spent weeks trying to decide on one when finally I said screw it I’ll just use my name and ‘oh’ in front of it because it feels natural to me and I doesn’t limit my options down the line.
You can use this tool to check if your desired domain is available and if not they will give you suggestions of similar names that are available!
There are a few things you should keep in mind when choosing a name:
Your name should be short as possible,
Easy to spell,
Easy to type,
Not overly specific,
Something you truly love yourself, because at the end of the day You are going to have to work with this name so don’t choose something that is only good for your audience or good for the SEO, it must also feel good to You!
Hope this brings you one step closer to starting a blog of your own!♥
